Have you heard of Roots of Lore? It’s a dreamy, new podcast that explores the roots of fairy tales and folklore to ponder the messages and morals they offered in times past and dig into the medicine they survived to offer us today.
I’ve been listening in every week since it launched in December! I’ve enjoyed getting to know these tales more deeply from a historical perspective. Host Caitlin Brehm’s curiosity and conscientiousness is a wonderful companion through the telling and exploration of each tale. In the first episode she beautifully delivers the essence of story as a tool for connection – to others, to ourselves, and to our roots – and does a fascinating dig into the lesser known, shall I say, sordid history of storytelling.
And did I mention yours truly is featured on episode three? I had so much fun talking with Caitlin about the use of storytelling as a tool for self-understanding.
We explored the infamous character of Bluebeard – a scandalous subject, indeed – and his parallels to the archetype of the predator: that sneaky, insidious internal critic who uses his wits and wiles to put limits around how we show up in the world.
Sound familiar? It should. We all wrestle with this archetype. He lies waiting, lurking in the shadows, ready to shackle us as soon as we push up against old boundaries and limiting stories about what our place is… in our families, our jobs, and society at large.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that once we become aware of these destructive energies within ourselves or our environment, we can begin to change them.
WITH AWARENESS COMES CHOICE. AND FROM CHOICE COMES INTENTIONALITY.
Purposefully flipping the script and rewriting the ending, one line at a time.
That’s exactly the order of business here at Wildish Collective. In March I’ll be kicking off a new program to guide you through the therapeutic use of storytelling, so you can get conscious about the energies and patterns at play in your life, and get intentional about penning the pages going forward. More details and registration coming very soon!
In the meantime, I hope I’ve gotten your wolf ears perked and that you’ll give this worthy podcast a listen. You can find all the episodes here on Caitlin’s website, on iTunes here, or by searching Roots of Lore on your favorite podcast outlet.
You can also follow along on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
You know, I can’t help but chuckle a little when Caitlin delivers the moral of the story as written by the author. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can hear the slightest tinge of blue coming through and I get a strong sense that Bluebeard might have been creeping close by and had a hand in drafting the epigram.
Have a listen for yourself and let me know in the comments if you can hear it, too!
